For some locals in Fairfax, Virginia, now is the perfect time to start ticking off their list of New Year’s resolutions. However, Kelly Anne Fitzpatrick of Living Green Magazine writes that locals might also want to create their own maintenance checklists to make sure all interior and exterior components—such as siding in Fairfax, in particular—is indeed damage-free.
“Check your siding for repairs
For wood siding, be on the lookout for any holes or rot, and be sure to first treat the cause of the damage before repairing it. If you have peeling paint, repaint the affected areas so that the underlying wood is sealed and protected from the elements.”
With Fairfax locals having to battle winter storms numerous times during the season, homes with wood siding would have taken a severe beating by now and are likely to show signs of mold growth, rotting, and cracking. Fortunately, locals with great handyman skills can repair their damaged wood siding through a technique referred to as “patching.” Patching is similar to how seamstresses and tailors repair torn clothing.
Under the patching method, the first step is to identify damaged wood clapboards and then carefully pull those areas away (along with the fasteners) using a pry bar. Any remaining nails can then be removed with a hacksaw blade. Next, the new wood clapboards need to be fastened in keeping with the same vertical line as the old wood clapboards.
This technique, however, only works if there are only a few damaged wood clapboards. If the damage is rather extensive, it may be more sensible to opt for a new Fairfax siding installation.
Siding replacement offers locals a good opportunity to explore other cladding materials that can withstand significant damage and require minimal maintenance. A good choice would be James Hardie fiber cement siding, which is made from a combination of sand, cement, and durable cellulose fibers. This type of siding can remarkably pull its own weight against Mother Nature’s harsh elements.
As part of your New Year’s resolutions, be sure to check on your wood siding and see if it needs to be repaired or replaced. If replacement is needed, you can count on reputable contractors like Mid Atlantic Construction of Virginia & Maryland to provide you with a durable option like fiber cement siding.
